Toddler constipation must be a good knowledge for parents. It is the condition when your child had not passed a bowel for four days or more. Constipation is defined as the passage of hard, dry stools that are painful or difficult to pass. Toddler constipation is a very common and frustrating problem that needs to be handled with proper care.
Toddler constipation can be upsetting for both parent and child. Passing a hard stool is painful and because of the pain your toddler may be holding on the urge to defecate because of fear to feel the pain. Holding the urge aggravates the problem because any delay to pass the stool makes it even painful because the stool can become harder. This condition is very common and there are many reasons why a toddler becomes constipated.
The main cause of toddler constipation is intake of diet that is low in fiber, such as milk products or peanut butter. It can also caused by drinking too much of milk especially cow’s milk, which is more likely to cause constipation. Many toddlers become constipated when they start consuming solids. This happens since the baby’s intestine is adjusting to a new type of food.
Toddler constipation may also be caused due to less consumption of water or going to bathroom after a long time. And a lack of physical activity can also be responsible for toddler’s constipation.
The signs of the toddler constipation can be varied. Bowel movements may slow down that is they are less frequent than what is normal for him. He may not have a bowel movement for three or more days. He might be having uncomfortable bowel movements and show discomfort and pain when passing a stool. Other signs include a swollen or hardened abdomen, hard and pebble-like stools. Sometimes infant’s belly can become swollen with gas.
Treating toddler constipation is basically just counter the cause. Just increase the water intake of your child daily when the cause is lack of fluids. When the cause is ingestion of unhealthy foods like junk foods and more carbohydrates, you will just have to adjust the carb content in the toddler’s food as well as exclude junk foods from his/her daily diet. Knowing the reasons why toddlers get constipated is really a big help for parents to know what to do in order to promote comfortable defecation.
Laxatives are necessary for toddler constipation. The use of laxatives may help the child to defecate regularly. There are two main ways in which laxatives for toddler constipation work:
* Laxatives that are stimulants or emptier help the bowel to push the stool out.
* Laxatives that are softeners helps in softening the hard stool.
Toddlers sometimes need laxatives for months rather than weeks. Toddler constipation and other bowel movement problems that appear in the early life can be diagnosed within the first few months. Meanwhile, you must remember that these laxatives are to allow the bowel to develop a normal habit.

You should also ensure that your child’s fluid intake is high by making them drink enough water and fresh fruit juice on regular basis.
